Thomas Wunsch Chasing Consistency, Wins With Hot Rods

After a successful campaign last year, it’s no secret Thomas Wunsch is excited for The Fyre Place & Patio Shop OSCAAR Hot Rods presented by Bromley Automotive season. 

“I'm looking forward to it,” Wunsch commented. “I'm excited to be back. It's been a long offseason and I'm looking forward to getting back into the car the first week at Flamboro (Speedway).”

Wunsch put together an impressive 2025 campaign, picking up a third-place finish in points with four top-five’s and nine top-10’s.

“Last year we had some good runs,” he commented. “I wish some of them were a bit better and more consistent. I've said that before, and that is something that I hope is more successful is our consistency this season than last. I hope we can get the finishes we deserve everywhere.”

For Wunsch, he feels continuing to get better as a driver will be beneficial, as the inconsistency currently comes from mistakes he is making behind the wheel.

One of the events last year where he made no mistakes resulted in a career-best second-place finish as he led the most laps in the Bill Zardo Memorial en route to a runner-up to Tyler Hawn. It’s why he is excited to return to Flamboro this season. 

“When the car is working well there, I feel really comfortable behind the wheel, and a lot of the other tracks like Delaware and Sauble are a lot the same,” he commented. “They are a lot of fun to drive at.

“It would mean a lot (to win the Zardo Memorial). It would mean everything, really? It’s an important race. Bill was an important figure to our sport that we love and to race in his honor is really cool.”

For Wunsch, racing has been in his blood since he was young as a result of his father running street stocks at Full Throttle Motor Speedway. He would grow up watching him, before getting behind the wheel of a four-cylinder car and moving up the ranks from there. 

The most memorable moments of his career, though, have come recently with the Hot Rods. Alongside the runner-up in the Bill Zardo Memorial, Wunsch picked up a track championship at Full Throttle Motor Speedway last season. 

“It's a good class that's affordable for me V8 racing and they are a lot of fun,” he commented. “I do like the hot rods because I also have a passion for old vintage cars and with hot rod series, you get the best of both worlds having a fast car and an old car.”

When asked about his dream vintage car for the street, Wunsch did not hesitate with his answer. 

“I'd like to have a Roadrunner maybe one day,” he offered. “If it were my dad's choice, he'd love a GTO Judge.”
